Gothic
Drifting through the parking lot at 04:30am, looking for the cat. Unable to sleep. A few minutes earlier a group of people arrived, talking and laughing on the top of their voices in the corridor not seeming to realise that the doors that surround them are the doors of people’s homes and that it is 4am. Selfish people empowered by selfish people, a perpetual cycle. Questioning the value of education because ‘it won’t help to get a job’ and not realising that it brings self-development, critical thinking skills, understanding, tolerance, independently formed worldviews, etc. If your only concerns in life are cheap ‘gas’ and large salaries, you have lost before you even start.
After going to Ojos for lunch, I watch England beat France in the ‘losers’ final of the world cup. It brings me very little joy because England were 4-0 up, then conceded 3 goals, and the tactical decisions once more puzzled me. After the game, I walked over to The Ginger Man pub and it was great. Many other regulars were there and beauty was everywhere. Later my tormented thoughts haunted to corridors like those clinging to the remnants of a gothic Abbey or Cathedral in a dark and misty forest deep in the heart of England. There’ll be no breakfast at Tiffany’s in spite of these thoughts, they merely fall and die like autumnal leaves as winter approaches. It’s the autumn of my life.
The fog clears, the sun begins to rise, a new morning has sprung. There is a cup of coffee, a book, a brief visit to see and feed the cat who waits ever so patiently in her outdoor kingdom. The temperature is relentless. We are in the peak of it, this mystifying heat. It is World Cup final day and there is almost too much choice in terms of places to go to watch it… and there is always home.
Vamos Spain!
