Flicker in time
Part I
My fear, as the week hurtles towards an end, is that we may see some really desperate attempt to create a dramatic global event from the leader losing health, losing power, losing credibility, losing legally, losing romantically. So, we drift in some form of hope, some form of fear, of doubt, of concern. Some people think they will receive money if they vote a certain way. Some people are simply terrified of betraying the father figure. The rising number of people who simply want common decency, the rising number of educated people in critical areas, give me hope. But that hope is a sceptical hope when I know that it goes up against the money of insane billionaires and the corruption of lost leaders with nothing to lose.
Part II
As a European, I always heard stories like ‘Americans know nothing outside of America.’ As a European who is now also an American citizen, living in America, I realise that many Europeans have no idea about American geography… the sheer magnitude of the continent, the fact that there is an East Coast and a West Coast that are farther apart than most countries in Europe could ever contemplate. Some could certainly not tell you where Miami or Dallas or Los Angeles are on the map. This disappoints me, but I realise and accept that we all have different interests.
Part III
Youth is swept from under your feet before you realise it. As I drift into my fifties my advice is that all people need to prepare to be alone. I am fortunate in that I enjoy being alone, but I have encountered such sadness in those who have lived life with the dream of a happy family, the perfect home, the perfect career. All we can do is learn to accept and adapt to change and to be content and happy to be alone. Because we all end up alone. I have lost many people because they have chosen to remove me from their lives… but, as I grow older, I lose more and more people to death. It haunts us all. I am extremely grateful to have travelled so much, to have lived in different countries, to have known so many exciting romances and events… and I now know that they are all just a flicker in time, a flash that is gone before we know it.
